Appleton Wiske is a small village in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire but it was actually one of the 41 ancient parishes of the Wapentake of Langbaurgh in the Cleveland division of the North Riding of Yorkshire. This dates back to the time of the Danelaw. A Wapentake was a meeting place where voting took place. This process continued into the 11th century when the Anglo Saxon ‘Hundreds’ administrative system took over from Danelaw. It is the right name for this wonderful apple shade.
