The name of these sandstone crags at the western end of Hasty Bank, the largest group of similar stones in the North York Moors, is often written as Wain Stones. They have been shaped by many centuries of wind, ice and rain. It is said that on a windy day you may hear the breeze making a wailing sound as it blows between the stones. The Saxon word wanian meant to grieve so maybe the wailing noise or the legend that a Danish chieftain was killed here gave it the name. On a sunny day, the stones have areas of silvery grey which is very similar to our light grey yarn.
