Alum has been used as a fixative for dyes in woolen textiles since the Romans. In fact, the Pope in Rome controlled the provision of Alum in this country until Henry VIII upset him in the 16th century and he cut off the supply. This problem for the woolen industry was resolved when Alum was found on the North York Moors. It is a dark grey rock which was taken from the cliffs around Ravenscar where streams or becks would cascade down to the shoreline.
