Description

Semerwater DK yarn, a deep and classic navy.

This beautiful, worsted spun high-end Border Leicester yarn is grown here on our farm in North Yorkshire, from our pedigree flock of over 300 pedigree Border Leicester sheep. It is a slaughter-free flock, so these sheep all live to grow old.

After shearing we handpick the fleeces and transport them to Bradford for washing, combing and worsted spinning. The result is stunning.  With a great handle, stitch definition and drape, it is the perfect yarn for your special project. British through and through and we are very proud of it!

Semerwater is the second largest natural lake in North Yorkshire. It is a glacial lake in the tiny dale of Raydale, off upper Wensleydale.  The name comes from the Old English sae, sea or lake, and mere, which can mean either pool or marsh. Therefore Semerwater means ‘marshy lake’. The lake sits in a three-sided valley and always seems to be a very dark blue. Our Semerwater DK yarn ripples like the water on that ancient lake.

One of the many legends about Semerwater says that when the wealthy town people refused to help a poor beggar, so he cursed the town. The curse caused it to be submerged. The only house to be spared was the poorest cottage where they gave him food. In 1937 when the water level was very low, excavations uncovered an iron-age settlement on what is now the bed of the lake.
